Selected Project

/presented artist: Alex Ehmer

Slow Burn centers on Candles, an ongoing body of work in which beeswax becomes both surface and subject. Impermanent, tactile, and responsive to heat, wax carries the possibility of preservation and disappearance at once. Through acts of melting, layering, accumulation, and erosion, the work approaches memory as something material, unstable, and continually transformed.

The project’s ritualistic dimension emerges through repetition, touch, and the devotional associations of the candle itself. Within this edition of the Uncool Gallery Solo Show, Slow Burn also enters into dialogue with South American artistic practices that have long engaged ritual, embodied knowledge, organic materials, and processes of transformation as forms of memory, resistance, and world-making.

It was a pleasure exhibiting my work with Uncool Gallery; it was an excellent platform to present and contextualize my research into a physical exhibition. The gallery encouraged meaningful dialogue between artistic practice and technical representation, while positively promoting the intent and identity of the work. The team at Uncool Artist and collaborator Lista Studios created a welcoming, professional, and thoughtfully supportive environment that supported both the installation and the artist in their development efforts. The experience fostered valuable conversations around the body of work and encouraged direction in its further conception. I am grateful for the opportunity to share this work with such a diverse and attentive audience. I greatly appreciated the dedication to care and quality throughout the entire gallery showing process.
